Should I Repair or Replace My Computer?

The best answer depends on the computer’s age, hardware condition, upgrade potential, data needs, and the cost of the repair relative to a suitable replacement.

Start with the failure, not the age

An older computer with a simple software problem may still be worth repairing. A newer computer with severe liquid damage or multiple failing components may not be.

When repair often makes sense

  • The problem is isolated and inexpensive to correct
  • The computer meets your actual performance needs
  • An SSD or memory upgrade can materially improve usability
  • Replacing the computer would require substantial setup or data migration

When replacement deserves serious consideration

  • Multiple major components are failing
  • The hardware cannot reasonably support required software
  • The repair cost approaches the price of a suitable replacement
  • The computer no longer meets security or business requirements
