Start with the failure, not the age
An older computer with a simple software problem may still be worth repairing. A newer computer with severe liquid damage or multiple failing components may not be.
When repair often makes sense
- The problem is isolated and inexpensive to correct
- The computer meets your actual performance needs
- An SSD or memory upgrade can materially improve usability
- Replacing the computer would require substantial setup or data migration
When replacement deserves serious consideration
- Multiple major components are failing
- The hardware cannot reasonably support required software
- The repair cost approaches the price of a suitable replacement
- The computer no longer meets security or business requirements
